Rain on Race Day

Rain on race day is a bummer. The worst part about it is possibly the time spent before the race, in the rain. (Although maybe not for very long races like the marathon.)

Some of my tips in last week’s post Rainy Running simply don't apply for race day. You can’t choose to run at a strategic time, or where you run. The tips that still apply are:

  • Wear a Hat

  • Invest in the Right Gear

  • Consider Waterproofing Your Shoes

  • Accept Reality: You’re going to get wet

Some of my other tips for Race Day:

1) Pick up your bib number the day before the race. This way you can avoid standing in a line outside getting cold and wet before the race. You can go directly to the start line, at the last possible moment.

2) Park in a parkade (structure) and warm up in there. Of course, watch out for vehicles as you do your stretches and jogging. Stay under cover until you have to head to the start line.

3) Wear a “disposable” outer layer. Choose an old jacket (or purchase one at a second hand store) that you don't mind never seeing again in case you want to discard layers during the run. Honestly, a plastic bag style rain poncho would work fine. You may look a bit goofy but if you can avoid getting cold and wet before the race it will really help your performance.

4) Do not skip or reduce your fueling. The rain may cause you to feel less thirsty or hungry, but your body needs the fuel, even more so if it’s burning calories just to keep your body warm. (On that note, if you start actually shivering, your body is using so much energy to make you shiver, trying to keep you warm. This is very bad for your performance. Avoid getting so cold you shiver.)
